Upgrade to Firefox 3.0.1 for more Security and Stability

Last month a very serious vulnerability was discovered in the Firefox source code which affected both Firefox 3 and Firefox 2.x.x and could allow a hacker to execute commands remotely on a machine. Hopefully this new update will fix this Firefox security hole too.

Firefox 3.0.1 fixes a lot of bugs and security issues that spawned through the initial release of Firefox 3.0. A complete list of all such security issues can be found Here.
As it is the first update since Firefox 3, so it is recommended for users to upgrade to Firefox 3.0.1 immediately.

Apple's App Store Launches

As the hype around the iPhone 3G launch tomorrow is kicking into high gear, Apple has released a new version of iTunes, which includes the long-awaited App Store. According to Pinch Media, there are currently 552 applications available in the store. More than 25% of the apps are available for free. Applications from the App Store will run on both the iPhone and iPhone touch after users upgrade to the latest firmware, which will also be released today.
As the new iPhone's hardware doesn't feature as many major technological or design breakthroughs as first iPhone did, a lot of attention has shifted towards the applications that can now run natively on the phone thanks to the firmware upgrade. Currently, according to Pinch Media, the most expensive app in the catalog costs $69.99, but, besides the free apps, the most common price points are $0.99, $4.99, and $9.99.

Some of the most interesting applications for the phone are the location-aware apps like Loopt. While there have always been location-aware applications for other phones with GPS capabilities, the iPhone might just give them the much needed push to finally become mainstream.

Track all Recent Activity on your Gmail Account

Google has recently added a new security feature to Gmail which lets users track their recent sessions and also allows them to sign out remotely.
Technically speaking, this new layer of information will let Gmail users track all recent activity on their Gmail account which indeed is an excellent new security measure.

Previously, Gmail has been the subject of a lot criticism in terms of security because of the Incoming Mail Filter Trojan (Click here to check Gmail Incoming Mail Filters) but now with this new feature it will overthrow every other mail service in terms of good security.

Malware: The Difference Between Quarantine and Delete

Just wanted to share a nifty information I found while trying to decide whether I should quarantine or delete malwares from my computer today. Apparently, the idea of having the "quarantine" option when an antivirus detects an infected file is to avoid false positives. If by chance the antivirus software wrongly flags a file as "bad" when the file is actually something you need, like a critical program (for example Explorer.exe in Windows) such that deleting it might cause the computer to stop working, quarantine allows it to simply restore it back.
Anything in quarantine is safely segregated from the rest of your computer, it cannot run from there, so it can do no harm. So the general advice is to put the infected files in quarantine for a while you go about your normal computer activities. If everything continues to run properly after a reasonable period of time (say, about a week or two), then delete the files in quarantine permanently.

Hitwise: Yahoo Would be Just Fine Without Search

Hitwise Intelligence took an interesting look at the breakdown of Yahoo's properties today. They come to the conclusion that, even if Yahoo sells off its search division, Yahoo's other properties probably wouldn't be too affected by this, as they get most of their traffic from Google's search anyway. Only Yahoo Image Search, Games, Maps, and News get most of their traffic from Yahoo Search.
Looking at these statistics, it becomes clear that most of Yahoo's properties would continue doing just fine without getting traffic from Yahoo Search. Also, according to Hitwise, Yahoo Search only gets about 12% of Yahoo's traffic anyway, while Yahoo's homepage and Yahoo Mail get a combined 68%.

How to Send Free Unlimited Text Messages from iPhone 3G

Believe or not but the new iPhone 3G data plans by AT&T have not made customers happy so far.
Above all, now you will need to pay an extra $5 every month to get 200 text messages which usually came free with previous iPhone data plans. So below you can read a trick on how to send unlimited text messages from iPhone for free.
Here we will be making use of a famous email-to-text service called Teleflip.com

  1. Create a new email message on your iPhone.
  2. In the To: box type, 1234567890@teleflip.com (where the numbers are placeholders for any 10-digit phone number), type a message and send.
  3. Enjoy free text messaging!

The message will be sent to the number in the email and all received text messages will be sent to you as an email.
If you want to use a web app to send text messages, use TxtDrop or Durgle as they work best on iPhone Safari.
Note: This trick will work for iPhone users in US and Canada only.

Crear Paginas webs Temporales

Facesaerch - Search for Face Images and Find People

Facesaerch basically helps you find face images of people and celebrities. It is powered by the Google Face Search technology which was unveiled by Google in July last year.
The image results are highly accurate and animate in a fancy cover-flow style which you might have experienced while using a Mac or iTunes. Other than celebrities, Facesaerch works good for finding pictures of common people too.
Facesaerch also has a Facebook app called FriendlyFlow which lets you browse your Facebook friends visually and receive live updates of what they are currently doing.

YouTube Continues to Destroy All Competitors in Declining Video Market

YouTube's huge lead in market share over other online video sites continues to get bigger, even as the over all video viewing market continues a decline. According to traffic analysts Hitwise, YouTube now sees 75.43% of traffic to the online video category; that's up 26% from it's May 2007 marketshare of 59.95%. The nearest competitor is still MySpaceTV, which was down a whopping 44% to 9% marketshare.
YouTube's huge dominance over a market that includes a wide variety of different video sites, each with different communities and feature sets, probably does not bode very well for innovation in the sector. We'd love to see more people checking out innovative services like Metacafe, Blip.tv and others. We wrote about the top video content producers in the world yesterday, many of which are bigger in places other than YouTube. Smaller up and comers outside of YouTube deserve some attention, too.

Lo elegí porque me sorprende que aunque cada vez se ven menos videos, YouTube sigue siendo el más elegido.

China Web Boom: .CN Now More Popular than .Net

China's top-level domain has now surpassed .net as the web's third most popular top-level and second most popular country-specific domain, according to a study by VeriSign says the Associated Press. VeriSign said that registrations of .cn domains had surged 23% in the first quarter of this year, and tripled year-over-year. China's domain boom is a sign of the country's growing importance on the web and rapidly expanding Internet user base.

The VeriSign report didn't break down domain numbers, but the running total from Germany's DENIC shows that China's .cn domain has about 11.8 million active registrations -- good enough for 3rd place and 230,000 more than fourth place .net domains. Germany's .de extension is in second place, about a quarter million registrations ahead of China, and the grand daddy of all domain extensions, .com, is comfortably in first place with 76.5 million domain registrations.

Men Around the World Access the Mobile Web Almost 10X as Much as Women, Study Says

Popular mobile browser provider Opera released a demographic report about their users today that provides some valuable, if sometimes unsurprising, insights into just who is accessing the web on their mobile phones. The two primary take-aways: 88.1% of people using the mobile Web around the world are male and most people using Opera Mini are between the ages of 18-27.
Opera's study will no doubt be discussed in settings ranging from marketing to advocacy of social equity in technology. It's a good one to have in the back of your mind when thinking about the mobile web.

Yahoo and Microsoft No Longer Speaking. Google Deal May Be The Only Option Left

12 de junio de 2008

Yahoo formally announced today that it is no longer in discussion with Microsoft for a deal of any sort. Both companies had renewed discussions once again exploring either an all-out acquisition or the sale of Yahoo’s search business. But Microsoft was “not interested in pursuing an acquisition of all of Yahoo!, even at the price range it had previously suggested..” And Yahoo’s board realized that selling its search business would effectively neuter the company in the long run. A search deal with Google now looks more likely.

Firefox 3 To Be Released On June 17th

12 de junio de 2008

Mozilla has been announcing Release Candidates for Firefox 3 consistently for the past month. In fact, Firefox 3 RC 3 was just released earlier today. One could guess that the time for an official release was right around the corner, but we wouldn't have guessed it'd be this soon. Only hours after RC3, and after 34 months of development, the company has announced that Firefox 3 will be officially released next Tuesday, June 17th.
What To Expect
If you haven't given any of the Firefox 3 RC's a shot, I can personally tell you that it's fast! Stability and performance has been consistently better than Firefox 2 with each RC. Memory usage has been down significantly over long periods of time compared to Firefox 2 where memory continued to rise with prolonged use. Features and fixes for Firefox 3 include:
Updated address bar with integrated bookmarking functionality
Standard themes that are consistent with the native UI of your Operating System (Windows, Mac, Linux)
Revamped bookmark manager
New Icons
One-click site information
Secure add-on updates
Vista Parental Controls
Revamped password management
Full page zoom
Scrolling Tabs
One-click bookmarking
Tags for bookmarks
tons more!
